Spring programme 2013

***This post has been updated to reflect changes in the running order, 03.01.13***

Get your spanking new 2013 diaries at the ready: we’re delighted to announce the titles of our next four screenings!

Friday 25 January

Hope-Springs-smallDirector: David Frankel (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, MARLEY & ME)
Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, Steve Carell

“Very funny, it’s also penetrating on the ravages of time on love and marriage and sweetly touching, but with abundantly incongruous randy content to heartily amuse.” Empire Magazine

“…a film of hilarious and heartfelt pleasures.” Rolling Stone Magazine

“In the end, of course, it comes down to the chemistry, and this relationship really does feel like one worth fighting for.”
The Daily Telegraph

We begin the year with this grown-up comedy starring Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones as a couple locked in a marriage gone stale. A world renowned relationship counsellor (played by the ever-watchable Steve Carell) offers hope of passion rekindled provided the couple can overcome their respective hang-ups…

A perfect movie to enjoy with friends over a glass of wine- remember, you can bring your own.

Friday 22 February

Laying_Quad_SKYFALL_smallDirector: Sam Mendes (AMERICAN BEAUTY)
Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Judy Dench, Naomie Harris

“This is not just the best Bond movie, it’s up there with the top action-adventures of all time” The Daily Mail

“Under the stylish direction of Sam Mendes, Dench’s M is quite simply the Bond girl to end all Bond girls”
The Guardian

“Daniel Craig remains Bond incarnate…cinematographer Roger Deakins makes the wildly ambitious action sequences the most beautiful in Bond’s 50-year career”
The Daily Telegraph

Bond is back in what critics and audiences alike are calling his best outing in years. The film has taken more than any other in British box office history, and offers the perfect blend of thrills and spills.

To celebrate his welcome return to form, we’re laying on a special themed event. Come dressed as your favourite Bond, baddie or beauty and join us for a Vodka Martini or two, shaken not stirred (naturally).

ARGO (15)
Friday 22 March

5396_Argo.smalljpgDirector: Ben Affleck (THE TOWN)
Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, John Goodman

“Argo is a crackerjack political thriller told with intelligence, great period detail and a surprising amount of nutty humor for a serious look at the Iran hostage crisis of 1979-81.” The Hollywood Reporter

“For 100 minutes, ‘Argo’ is close to flawless.” Time Out

“There’s no doubt [Ben Affleck’s] crafted one of the best movies of the year.” Rolling Stone Magazine

“[A] gripping, beautifully performed and often very funny but dramatic thriller.” Radio Times

February brings a fast-paced thriller based on a true story straight out of the, erm, movies.

Ben Affleck directs and stars in this remarkable tale behind the escape of US citizens from Tehran at the time of the 1979 revolution.

The film is edge-of-the-seat gripping and surprisingly funny, so should help to banish the last of the winter blues. More impressive still, Argo‘s quality was recognised earlier this month when the American Film Institute (no less) included it in the list of top 10 films of 2012.

Saturday 20 April

Director: Tom Hooper (THE KING’S SPEECH)

Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter

“A five-star movie musical extravaganza that hums with the spirit of Victor Hugo’s classic novel and the landmark stage show upon which it’s based.” The Daily Mail

“The Mamma Mia it’s all right to like.” The Daily Telegraph

How do you follow a much-loved, big budget Bond? With a much-loved,  big budget musical of course!

Join us as we transform Llancarfan Village Hall into a West End theatre for a special performance of the musical event of 2013.

Come and marvel at the spectacle of A list talent banging out show tunes in a French accent. And remember to bring your singing lips for the choruses: all together now…

Please note: for this special performance doors will open at 6.00pm and we’ll start the programme at 6.30pm. In keeping with theatreland tradition, there’ll be a chance to take a breather and recharge the batteries with an ice cream (or stiff drink) during an intermission.

Festive fun!

Last Saturday over 70 people attended our special Christmas screening of We Bought a Zoo (PG). Despite the daunting prospect that children outnumbered the grown-ups, our first ever matinee performance was a huge success and bodes well for more to follow.

And here’s the best bit: the screening raised a tidy sum for local good causes. The audience was treated to mulled wine and mince pies, a chocolate fountain and our usual selection of luxury ices; and thanks to their generosity we’re able to donate £100 to the Cerys Potter Foundation and Dreams & Wishes.

We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who turned out for us, and we look forward to welcoming you back in 2013. Nadolig Llawen!
