The season starts with The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015, PG), sequel to the popular India-set film we launched with in 2012. The ever-fabulous cast (Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton etc.) is joined by Richard Gere, in what promises to be a bit of late summer sunshine to get our new season off to a warm-hearted start! Expect drinks and Indian bites to get the celebrations going.

October brings our second ever documentary screening, Amy (2015, 15), focusing on the life and tragic death of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. Directed by Asif Kapadia, whose documentary about Ayrton Senna (Senna) broke box office records a few years back, this film is both moving and salutary. One for the singer’s fans and admirers, and anyone interested in the dark side of the modern cult of celebrity.

November sees another fine and seasoned British actor at the top of his game. Sir Ian McKellen plays Sherlock Holmes as we’ve never seen him before, in Bill Condon’s Mr. Holmes (2015, PG). Expect an intelligent re-working of the classic literary hero, and look out for Laura Linney who puts in a fine performance as well.

In the run up to Christmas, here’s a little Secret Santa gift with an edge! Wild Tales (2014, 15) wowed critics and audiences alike when it debuted last year, securing an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film and a slew of other top awards. It’s a film in six parts, each telling a story on the theme of revenge. Deliciously funny, wicked and acerbic, satirical and outrageous… what better way to spice up the pre-Christmas countdown? There’ll be mulled wine and mince pies on the night, to add further festive cheer!

This year, our annual family matinee sees the return of the Minions (2015, PG), whom we last saw in Despicable Me 2, which was 2013’s Christmas performance. We thought we’d invite them back after such a roaring success! Expect lots of incomprehensible dialogue and a room full of besotted children in hysterics. Grown ups can look forward to festive drinks…
