Never look a gift horse in the mouth, as the saying goes. Wise words indeed, and we did well to heed them when deciding our final film of the year.
Luckily, Louise Osmond’s Dark Horse (2015) rode into view at the right moment, and Film Hub Wales, which supports cultural film screening activity, was on hand to provide financial backing for the event.
That’s how we came to book our first documentary to play in the village hall, a decision not without some risk. In the event the film proved a very popular draw and we scheduled a second screening to meet demand.
Not only was the audience on both nights treated to a masterclass in non-fiction filmmaking, but special refreshments and a raffle were available to raise much needed funds for the village hall.
In all, the screenings raised £580, which is entirely down to the generosity and support of all those who attended (congratulations once again to the raffle winners). Of course, thanks are also due to Film Hub Wales, and to the film’s distributor, Picturehouse Entertainment, for allowing us to screen the work ahead of its official DVD release (10 August).
It’ll be hard to top this season finale, but at least we have a year to plan for it…
