FRIDAY 22 JANUARY 2016

Suffragette (12A)

★★★★
“A valuable, vital and absorbing film… a heartfelt, red-blooded drama”
The Guardian

★★★★
“The Suffragettes finally get the film they deserve.”
Time Out

★★★★
“Carey Mulligan is magnificent”
The Times

Carey Mulligan stars in this long-awaited dramatisation of the historic struggle for women’s voting rights, based on real events in the early part of the last century. Ably supported by Anne-Marie Duff, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep, the film follows Mulligan’s character as she enters the early feminist movement while events take a dangerous turn.

FRIDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2016

The Martian (12A)

★★★★
Empire

“The Martian succeeds because everyone involved does his or her job, and does it superbly […] The result is, to an uncommon degree, a complete success.”
The Atlantic

Based on the best-selling novel by Andy Weir, and directed by Ridley Scott, The Martian tells the story of Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon), presumed dead after a fierce storm during a mission to Mars, and left behind by his crew. Watney survives and finds himself stranded on the hostile planet. NASA works tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crew plan a daring rescue mission. The star-studded cast also includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Donald Glover and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

FRIDAY 18 MARCH 2016

Spectre (12A)

“In pure action adventure terms, Spectre delivers the goods, with plenty of revved-up supercar porn and several kinetic high-speed chase sequences on road, river and snowy mountain slope.”
Hollywood Reporter

“This fourth outing for Daniel Craig as James Bond is achingly cool, as sleek and powerful as the silver Aston Martin DB10 that races through the movie.”
The Times

Back in 2013 we hosted a special Bond night with a screening of Skyfall and themed cocktails. It went down a treat, and we’ve decided to do it all again with the latest Bond outing as the centrepiece. Daniel Craig (Bond) is joined by Christoph Waltz as Blofeld, and the film ties up some loose ends from early films amid some truly stunning action sequences. Guaranteed to leave you shaken and stirred.

FRIDAY 15 APRIL 2016

The Lady in the Van (12A)

★★★★
“Quite simply, the ultimate, authorised version: filmed in the very street, in the very house, in the unchanged rooms where it all happened…the glory of the film remains: Maggie Smith, the best thing ever to come out of Romford, possibly. She’s hilarious. There’s nobody like her.”
Evening Standard

Dame Maggie Smith recreates one of her most celebrated roles – the singular Miss Shepherd – in The Lady in the Van, Alan Bennett’s adaptation of his memoir and stage play. Filmed on the street and in the house where Bennett and Miss Shepherd lived, acclaimed director Nicholas Hytner reunites with Bennett (The Madness of King George, The History Boys) to bring this touching, poignant, and life-affirming story to the screen. The event is run as a charity fund raiser in association with the Tuesday Club, and more details will follow closer to the time.
