With the last of our two May screenings behind us, the 2015/16 season has now officially ended.
Our fourth year included some real screen gems, and a fair amount of globetrotting. We started with a return visit to India (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), where a bunch of septuagenarians while away their retirement in 40˚C heat. And we ended the year with a tale of two feuding septuagenarian brothers in the harsh grip of an Icelandic winter (RAMS). Talk about extremes.
During the year we screened our first ever documentary (Amy), which lifted the lid, in an extraordinary way, on the tragic underside of the modern obsession with celebrity.
We also caught up with Sherlock Holmes, now in retirement (Mr. Holmes), and raised a few quid for the village hall with a film quiz.
Minions kept the kids (big and small) entertained at Christmas, and who could forget that dirty protest in Wild Tales, our Argentinian festive treat for grown-ups? More Christmas log, anyone?
Suffragette cast long-overdue cinematic light on the struggle for women’s voting rights, and we learned that a potato-a-day helps you work, rest and play on Mars (The Martian).
Bond returned in Spectre, and themed cocktails were ably shaken, stirred and quaffed with professional zeal. The Lady in the Van helped raise funds for local good causes (which was very good of her), and our penultimate screening took us from County Wexford in Ireland to New York, and backwards in time (Brooklyn).
All in all, it’s been quite a journey. Special thanks to everyone who bought tickets and joined in the fun- we couldn’t do it without you!
There’s plenty to look forward to in our fifth season, starting this September. We’ll share full programme details in July, along with the date of this year’s AGM event. Until then, enjoy the summer!
